Applied Mathematics / Data Science (ENG) full-time

Data Science = the brains behind smart decisions.

Bachelor in Applied Mathematics/Data Science

For whom?

Applied Mathematics/Data Science is a 4-year bachelor programme that develops and trains your skills in mathematics and programming and teaches you to apply them to real-world situations as early as Year 1. Structured to provide you with as many opportunities as possible, by the end of Year 2 you will be well-rounded enough to confidently pursue any specialisation that takes your fancy.

You will explore the field of Data Science and other related career paths through individual and team projects, and work on the soft skills you want to gain as a working professional. Read on to find out more!

Applied Mathematics courses

Applied Mathematics/Data Science combines theory with practice and operates on the borders of IT and mathematics. Discover more about the Applied Mathematics/Data Science courses, minors, internships and the programme structure below.

The programme summary

Summary

The Learning Environment
Applied Mathematics / Data Science offers you an international and interactive environment full of like-minded individuals from all over the world. Meaning: you will work often as a team and pick up new perspectives from different cultures, flavours and ways of thinking. It can be scary to start on a new adventure alone, so we made certain no one has to be. You will present ideas and do projects together, learn directly from field professionals, and get a lot of personal attention as well as personal space. You’ll also receive plenty of chances to come up with and realise your own creative ideas.

The Programme Build-up
Years 1 and 2 are both split up into 4 terms. Each of these terms has a central focus, that guides the maths and IT knowledge you gain towards a specific applicable purpose within the realm of Data Science. You will work on 2 large projects a year, to cover 4 major themes: Data Science, Databases, App development and Web Science. Together with students from Years 2 and 4, you will choose and develop a third project as a team during the Learning Challenge.

In Year 3, it’s time to put all your hard-earned abilities to work and decide where you want to specialise further. The other half of this year will be dedicated to an internship in Holland or abroad. Afterwards, you will be ready to delve deeper and tackle one of the specialisation tracks we offer. You can also do an exchange, or start a minor that suits you elsewhere.

Finally, in Year 4, you will follow a series of expert courses covering several specialised career fields, and finish your programme with a graduation project.

The Course Focus
Click on any of the tabs to the left to find out which courses and projects you will be following that year. Each course falls under one of the four main categories of learning that together constitute a full term:

  1. Strength in Numbers
Formulas, models and maths. These make up the tools you need to analyse information, solve puzzles and detect patterns. You will learn the techniques to use numbers to your advantage and be able to investigate and manipulate data on a grand scale.
  2. Everything up to Code
Programming is just as vital to today’s Data Scientist and will take up roughly the same amount of time as the maths category. Combined with your new maths skills, you will learn to develop more and more complex coding solutions using Python, Java, SQL and other computer languages. By creating models and apps from code, you’ll give life to data and numbers so they can be applied to real-life situations.
  3. Practice makes Perfect
The first two categories will give you a solid foundation of scientific theory used in Applied Mathematics. Of course, you will put this into practice soon enough and gather experience through observation, application in real and simulated projects, and experimentation.
  4. Beneficial Intelligence
Last but not least, any job requires a set of non-technical soft skills, or professional skills, in order to fit into the workplace comfortably and with confidence. Like data, this involves being able to analyse and interpret, except in this case, it applies to the people you’ll work with, and the situations that may arise. We will support you in growing as a person, to the extent that you need (and want), into a professional who can easily collaborate, communicate, reflect on themself and on others, think critically and learn.

Please note: We try our best to keep the curriculum and our methods continuously up-to-date with the times and the latest in field-related developments. Therefore, a few elements may be readapted along the way. If they are, we can ensure you it will only be to further improve the programme!

The programme - Year 1

Year 1

In the first year, you will become acquainted with the broad fields of Mathematics, Engineering and Data Science, and get the basic skillset for all three. The coursework for each theme will be roughly divided like this:

40% - Strength in Numbers aka 'Maths'
28% - Everything up to code aka 'IT'
15% - Practice makes Perfect aka 'projects'
17% - Beneficial Intelligence aka 'Soft skills'

First-year Applied Mathematics/Data Science courses

Term 1

  • Precalculus
  • Python 1
  • Introduction to Data Science
  • English 1
  • Statistics 1

Term 2

  • Calculus 1

The programme - Year 2

Year 2

In the second year, you will continue the name track at intermediate level, and a few extra courses will be added. By the end, you will be ready to start looking for your ideal area of specialisation!

The coursework for each theme will be roughly divided like this:

32% - Strength in Numbers  aka ‘Maths’
32% - Everything up to Code aka ‘IT’
20% - Practice makes Perfect aka ‘Projects’
16% - Beneficial Intelligence aka ‘Soft skills’

The programme - Year 3

Year 3

During your third year, you will seek out and do a 5-month internship at an organisation of your choice. This will enable you to become familiar with the day-to-day work of an engineering professional and the opportunities this line of work presents. If you wish, you can do the internship abroad!

After completing your internship you will enter the specialisation phase. The two specialisation tracks we offer within the programme will take you further into Data Science.

The track we focus on is Deep Learning – you will gain more knowledge about neural networking and its implications. In the second part, you will work on a project focused on the different applications of Deep Learning in real life – from medical condition prediction to water management, etc.

It is also possible to do an international exchange or opt for a related minor at another school or programme. Our partner universities include Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft in Berlin and Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci in Paris.

The programme - Year 4

Year 4

In the fourth and last year, you will complete your theoretical toolkit by following expert courses and working on a few final projects:

  • Research 4
  • Machine Learning
  • Project Data Science
  • Learning Challenge 3
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Geographic Information Systems
  • Data Engineering and Cloud Computing

You will conclude your studies with a graduation project, or thesis. This is done independently, by setting up and conducting your own applied research project within a real company or organisation
